2nd XI Match Reports

Broomfield 1: 3 Bank of England 13/04/2002

Another poor performance leaving the second team slip with just one win in the last ten games.

Broomfield started the game in an upbeat mood with the team taking advantage of the wide pitch and the near perfect playing surface. Early pressure was soon rewarded via a fine headed goal by Dwayne from a pinpoint corner from Knight. It seemed as if this would be the catalyst for further goals but Broomfield soon lost the initiative and allowed BOE to get back into the game just before half time with a sloppy equalizer caused by poor defending.

BOE started the second half the brighter team and never allowed the Broomfield midfield to settle on the ball. An early second half substitution saw Knight retire through injury to be replaced by Lothian. The reshuffle in midfield failed to inspire any creativity and meant that BOE kept the upper hand and soon took the lead after confusion in the Broomfield box meant a simple tap in for the BOE striker. Discipline then began to fade as heads dropped which saw booking for Nathan “chopper” Tulley and Jody “bite yer legs” Fry, both for silly fouls after being caught in possession.

A brief spell attacking play which could have seen Broomfield get back into the game was soon negated after a spectacularly lucky goal from BOE left keeper Dorling with no chance of stopping a looping shot from outside the box. The rest of the game saw Broomfield going through the motions and creating very little till the final whistle with BOE unlucky not to add to their total.

Team: Dorling, Tulley, Tomaso, Bayley, Brennan, Kirk, Fry, Knight (Lothian), Dwayne, Walker, Bernard

Broomfield 1-1 Alexandra Palace 06/04/2002

Another poor performance by the Broomfield second team against bottom of the league Alexandra Palace means that the team will have to play out the last few games of the season looking over their shoulder as they get dragged nearer the relegation dogfight. Strong wind, bright sunlight and a poor pitch may go some way to explain the worst game we have taken part in this season but as with so many of our other performances this season the team just didn’t get out of first gear. A rare good spell of play fifteen minutes into the first half saw Jody Fry unleash a rare left foot strike from the edge of the box which sailed through a crowded box to beat the diving AP keeper and hit the bottom left hand corner of the net. Scrappy play followed with Alexandra Palace putting us under pressure that eventually saw them rewarded with an equaliser five minutes from half time. Goalkeeper Adam Bishop sustained a nasty ankle injury attempting to save the goal a nd could not continue into the second half. Hasty re-organisation was needed at half time with right back Nathan “Teflon” Tulley volunteering to go in-between the sticks.

The second forty-five minutes continued just as poorly as the first with neither team gaining the upper hand and very little goalmouth action. Makeshift keeper Tulley did what was asked of him in goal and just had one save to make when he thwarted the lively AP striker on the edge of the six-yard area. Broomfield then went down to 10 men for 15 minutes of the 2nd half with Joel Regisford experiencing blurred from a rare header. He came back on and seemed to play better even though he couldn’t see! ;-) The game drew to an uninspiring end with both teams glad to end a dismal game. As has been said so many times this season “We need to improve for next week”…We’ll see!!

Team: Bishop (Allen), Bailey, Knight, Kirk, Regisford, Walker, Wescott (J), Fry, Tulley, Brennan, Bernard

Broomfield 0-3 Old Esthameians 23/03/2002

Broomfield’s poor recent form continued on Saturday when they went down 3-0 to an Esthameians side pushing for promotion.

A lively first half saw both sides go close to scoring. Broomfield’s best opening fell to Richard Wescott after being put through by Ray Cherenou, but he was unlucky to see his shot go wide after lobbing the keeper from a difficult angle.

With the scores even at the start of the second half it was anybody’s game. However, an unfortunate fumble after a terrific save from Adam Bishop gifted Ole E’s their first, and ten minutes later Esthameians centre half was allowed to head home unmarked from a free kick. This clearly took the wind out of Broomfield’s sails and Esthameians scored a cracking third goal when their wing back fired in from 20 yards out. To round off a miserable day, Richard Wescott fired a penalty over the bar in the dying minutes.

Team; Bishop, Tomaso, Bailey, Thompson, Regisford J, Fry, Cherenou, Knight, Allen, Walker, Wescott.

Broomfield 3-3 Lloyds TSB 16/03/2002

A highly entertaining game saw Broomfield come from 3-1 down in the last ten minutes to snatch a point against Lloyds on Hazlewood.

Broomfield started the stronger of the two sides, heavily pressurising the Lloyds defence who held out until the twentieth minute when Jody Fry fired home from the edge of the area to give Broomfield the lead.

The only two Lloyds attacks in the first half resulted in them scoring two goals. The first a free kick into the box that evaded everybody and bounced into the net, and the second the result of the wing back being free at the far post to fire home.

The second half saw Broomfield search for the equaliser. They constantly threatened the Lloyds goal but were unable find a way through. Fifteen minutes from time saw a Lloyds corner pushed into his own net by Otis Thompson, who very gamely agreed to go in goal after Broomfield lost their regular keeper on the morning of the game.

Broomfield refused to lie down and accept defeat and with time running out, Andy Tomaso’s long free kick into the box was superbly flicked in by Clyde Brennan to make it 3-2. With time almost up, another carbon copy free kick from Andy Tomaso was this time met by Ray Cherenou who rose above the defence to nod home the equaliser.

It was a fine comeback from Broomfield and no more than their battling deserved.

Team; Thompson, Tomaso, Bailey, Brennan, Bernard, Fry, Cherenou, Knight, Allen, Wescott, Walker, (Regisford J).

Broomfield 0-3 Lensbury 09/03/2002

Broomfield’s miserable run on Hazlewood continued on Saturday when they were beaten by Lensbury.

The conditions were awful, a strong blustery wind creating chaotic scenes at times, but Lensbury adapted to the conditions better and went ahead when poor marking from a corner allowed the Lensbury midfielder to score a free header. Another defensive slip cost Broomfield dear when they failed to clear their lines and the Lensbury forward shot low into the net.

The second half saw Broomfield create numerous half chances, but they could not get a foothold back into the game. Ten minutes from time Broomfield conceded possession in midfield, and despite the Lensbury forward departing from an offside position, the Referee allowed the goal to stand.

Team; Bishop, Tomaso, Bailey, Brennan, Allen, Cherenou, Fry (Bernard), Thompson, Regisford J, Wescott R (Hamilton), Walker.

Polytechnic 4-0 Broomfield 02/03/2002

Broomfield came up against a strong Polytechnic side on Saturday and suffered a 4-0 defeat.

Despite going 1-0 up early on, Polytechnic didn’t have everything their own way as Broomfield gradually clawed their way back into the game and enjoyed a period of sustained pressure. Rob Walker, playing as the lone striker, caused the Poly defence all sorts of problems and eventually won a penalty after being tripped in the area. A great opportunity to level the score was spurned as Lee knight skewed his penalty wide of the post. Salt was rubbed into the wounds when Polytechnic doubled their lead on the stroke of half time.

The second half was hard fought; Broomfield throwing men forward to get back into the game and Polytechnic looking dangerous on the break. Ten minutes from time, a Poly forward ran unmarked from deep to round Adam Bishop to score, and with the last kick of the game, the same forward benefited from a scramble in the area when the ball landed at his feet to score.

Polytechnic are a good side will surely go up. Broomfield were left to reflect upon what might have been if they had converted the penalty to equalise.

Team; Bishop, Tomaso, Brennan, Bailey, Kirk, Leach, Knight, (Allen), Wescott J, Wescott R, Bernard, Walker.

Lensbury 3 - 4 Broomfield 23/02/2002

After three successive league defeats, Broomfield ended their recent dismal run with a hard fought 4-3 victory away to Lensbury.

Things started disastrously for Broomfield, as Lee Knight felt unwell in the warm up and Andy Bailey was suffering from Asthma. It was no surprise that with no substitutes Broomfield soon found themselves 2-0 down. Lensbury continued to dominate the game for the first half hour and it was only when Broomfield managed to get a foothold in the game, by way of some fluid passing movements, that they finally managed to trouble the Lensbury defence. Lee Knight, playing as a makeshift forward because of his illness, managed to turn with his back to goal and score to reduce the deficit. This was a result of good work by Ray Lothian and Peter Kirk.

The second half started more positively for Broomfield as they gradually started to take control of the game. The equaliser was scored ten minutes into the half when Richard Wescott’s free kick was headed past the keeper by a Lensbury defender. Close chances followed at either end until Broomfield took the lead when another Lensbury defender put past his keeper after being put under pressure by the Broomfield forwards.

With the game now finely balanced, Broomfield gave away a poor penalty to allow Lensbury equalise at 3-3. However with ten minutes remaining, more good passing allowed Peter Kirk to feed Richard Wescott, whose first time chip beat the keeper into the corner of the net to give Broomfield a 4-3 lead. A great goal that turned out to be the winner.

Despite things seeming to conspire against them, Broomfield showed great character and strength to fight back from 2-0 down. It was also vitally important for them to pick up three points after having a poor recent home run. No-one typified the strength and character shown on the day more than Peter Kirk, who got through a tremendous amount of work in the right wing back position.

Team; Bishop, Tomaso, Bailey, Brennan, Kirk, Fry, Regisford J, Knight, Allen, Wescott, Lothian.

Broomfield 2 - 3 South Bank Cuaco 16/02/2002

Broomfield’s recent slump continued on Saturday when they again lost at home. A horrendous week for cry-offs and non-availability meant that Broomfield started with some players in unfamiliar positions.

A poor first half performance resulted in Broomfield trailing 2-0 at half time, poor marking allowing two clear efforts on goal. South Bank deserved their lead as they controlled the first half from the start.

The second half saw Broomfield respond to a half time dressing down from Mick Young, and they proceeded to dominate the game. A good flick from makeshift forward Kaz Gibson was converted by Joel Regisford. Jody Fry then hit the post as Broomfield continued to dominate, and soon after Rupert Allen’s good run and cross was met by Joel Regisford again to score the equaliser and his second.

Broomfield continued to put South Bank’s defence under pressure, Regisford again went close after rounding the keeper, and Richard Wescott caused panic in the South Bank defence after robbing their keeper of the ball.

Ten minutes from time however, South Bank scored what proved to be the winner with a counter attack. Their wide player cutting in from the left and hitting a 35-yard strike into the top corner.

Another defeat, the third in a row on Hazlewood which is proving a difficult surface to play on, has obviously dented confidence to a certain degree. The team seems to have lacked a certain sharpness in recent weeks that has undoubtedly contributed to the recent slump they have been experiencing.

Team; Dorling, Tomaso, Bailey, Wilson, Kirk, Fry, Regisford J, Wescott R, Allen, Gibson, Hamilton (Leech).

Broomfield 1 - 3 Polytechnic 02/02/2002

Broomfield went down to a second successive league defeat on Saturday against Polytechnic at Hazlewood.

Despite playing against the strong wind in the first half, Broomfield battled well and played some nice passing football. Polytechnic were lively in possession but failed to create any clear cut chances, as Broomfield worked hard to keep the scorline even going into the second half, where they would enjoy the advantage of the strong wind.

The second proved to be disappointing for Broomfield however, as they never really got going and Polytechnic took advantage. Polytechnic took the lead when their forward volleyed in unmarked in the area, and increased their lead shortly afterwards when their lively wing back ran unchallenged to slot the ball past Adam Bishop in goal.

Ian Monk reduced the deficit to give Broomfield a glimmer of hope, but five minutes from time more bad Broomfield defending allowed their forward to run with the ball and fire home.

A game where Broomfield got it right in the first half, but badly wrong in the second. They did not raise their game sufficiently enough to fully take advantage of the wind, and consequently paid the price as Polytechnic applied themselves well to deservedly win the game.

Team; Bishop, Gibson (Monk), Brennan, Bailey (Tomaso), Kirk, Fry, Regisford J, Knight, Allen, Lothian, Wescott.

Broomfield 1 - 4 Carshalton 19/1/2002

When they are good they are very very good, but when they are bad…

Broomfield’s 2nd XI sent ‘body doubles’ to play on Saturday, whilst the ‘originals’ enjoyed a self imposed well deserved rest. Consequently their recent good form came to an abrupt end when they suffered a heavy defeat at home to Carshalton.

Carshalton took the lead on ten minutes when a long clearance from their keeper was not dealt with and their lively forward nipped in to score. Broomfield then settled in to some passing play and carved two or three good openings which they failed to convert. On the half-hour however, a vaguely familiar Ian Monk was fouled in the area and someone looking suspiciously like Richard Wescott scored the equaliser from the penalty spot.

This failed to be catalyst that Broomfield were hoping for as Carshalton took the lead again when their forward, despite starting from a clear offside position, raced through to score again.

The second half proved frustrating for Broomfield as they could not find a way through to equalise. Poor defending allowed Carshalton to increase their lead and they were very much in the ascendancy at this point. On the hour they had a man dismissed for violent conduct, but Broomfield could not capitalise. This was largely due to the fact that they played naively with the extra man, choosing to continually run at players rather than pass their way around them.

Broomfield’s misery was compounded when on the final whistle, their forward ran through again from another offside position to score Carshalton’s fourth.

After fine recent performances, Broomfield were extremely poor on Saturday. Two offside goals cannot disguise the fact that Broomfield did not deserve anything from a game which they badly needed to win to maintain the pressure on the teams above them. Only Mark Robbins can emerge from the game with any credit. However, the original 2nd XI should be back next Saturday from their week off, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Team; Robbins, someone like Gibson, someone like Tomaso, someone like Bailey, someone like Kirk, someone like Fry, someone like Wilson, someone like Brennan, someone like Allen, someone like Wescott, someone like Monk, (someone like Lothian).

Old Salesians 1 - 5 Broomfield 12/01/2002

Broomfield’s rich scoring vein continued on Saturday with another emphatic victory, this time 5-1 away to Old Salesians.

Broomfield took the lead on 5 minutes, when an exquisite through ball from Jody Fry found Ray Lothian who rounded the keeper to finish well. Broomfield then frequently conceded possession to allow Salesians to control the game for half an hour. However the Broomfield defence of Andy Tomaso, Clyde Brennan and Andy Bailey defended well with the help of Mark Robbins in goal.

Ten minutes before the break Broomfield were awarded a free kick to the left of the Salesians penalty area. Lee Knight struck a low shot at goal which bounced up in front of the keeper and went through his hands to give Broomfield a 2-0 lead. The remainder of the half finally saw Broomfield settle in to a fluid passing game that the space on a big pitch deserved.

Half time instructions from Mick Young saw Broomfield continue their passing game and they started to open up Salesians at will. Ray Lothian got his second and Broomfield’s third when the ball fell to him a couple of yards out after Rupert Allen’s cross had bounced bizarrely along the crossbar. Joel Regisford scored the fourth after slotting the ball passed the advancing keeper, and Ian Monk scored a fine fifth goal, the result of Broomfield keeping possession from the back and passing their way accurately into attack.

Despite Salesians scoring a great consolation goal, their forward volleying in from 20 yards out, Broomfield continued to dominate and could of increased the score, especially as Peter Kirk created numerous chances from acres of space on the right hand side.

Another emphatic win, the second in a row, sees Broomfield back in contention with the hunting pack in Division 2. There is a fine spirit in the side, which is helping the team get through difficult periods in recent matches.

Team; Robbins, Tomaso, Brennan, Bailey, Kirk, Fry, Regisford, Knight, Allen, Georgiou, Lothian (Monk).

Broomfield 6 - 1 Bank of England 05/01/2002

Good approach play and lethal finishing saw Broomfield storm to an emphatic 6 - 1 victory over the Bank Of England on Hazelwood.

A great start saw Broomfield three up within 20 minutes. Ray Lothian opened the scoring after Rupert Allen’s great run down the left wing, Joel Regisford then scored a great individual goal, running from the right back position into the opposing penalty area and slotting passed the keeper, and Ray Lothian got his second after a defensive mix up left him one on one with the keeper and he finished superbly.

A penalty, harshly given against Lee Knight for a great defensive headed clearance, saw Bank Of England reduce the distance, and despite enjoying more possession they failed to trouble Chris Steadman in the Broomfield goal.

The second half started with Broomfield having to defend resiliently against everything that was thrown at them by a determined Bank Of England. Having successfully dealt with the pressure applied, Broomfield started to enjoy stretching the play out more, a result of good periods of possession play. Jody Fry scored the fourth after fine work by Peter Kirk and Joel Regisford got his second with a super shot on the turn to make it 5 - 1. Paul Georgiou started dropping deeper and constantly opened up the Bank Of England backline with defence splitting passes. It was after another of these passes that Rupert Allen again got down the left to cross for Joel Regisford to complete a fine hat-trick.

However, there was still more incident as Georgiou had a penalty saved and Andy Bailey performed heroics by denying the Bank Of England forward a sure goal in the six yard box.

A super way to start the new year, especially as the 2nd team have in recent seasons taken a long time after Christmas to find their form. Confidence should be high for their next game this Saturday.

Team; Steadman, Gibson, Tomaso (Wilson), Bailey, Regisford J, Fry, Brennan, Knight (Kirk), Allen, Georgiou, Lothian (Monk).

Alleyn Old Boys 2 - 0 Broomfield 15/12/2001

A hard fought encounter against a very strong Alleyn’s side saw Broomfield go down to a 2-0 defeat.

After a heavy defeat against Alleyn’s earlier in the season, Broomfield were a lot more combative in midfield and space for both sides was at a premium. A penalty was awarded to Alleyn’s midway through the first half for a push in the area, and it was converted well for Alleyn’s to lead going into half time.

In the second half Broomfield worked hard at trying to break down a resilient Alleyn defence, but could not create the clear cut opening needed to score. However, Rupert Allen did break into the box after a surging run only to be up-ended. What looked a certain penalty to everybody was not given by the referee, and that seemed to compound the feeling that the game was quickly slipping away from Broomfield. Slack marking from a corner confirmed this, as Alleyn got their second and the game was well and truly over.

A frustrating performance for Broomfield, who although were not overrun, failed to really threaten Alleyn. If perhaps the penalty had been awarded, then Broomfield could have held on for a well earned point against a side who will definitely be pushing for promotion this season. Promotion is also a goal that Broomfield are aiming for, although they will have to start getting results against the top sides in the division to realise this.

Team; Robbins, Gibson, Tomaso, Bailey, Holbard, Kirk, Allen, Knight, Regisford J, Georgiou, Lothian, (Fry).

Winchmore Hill 2 - 0 Broomfield 1/12/2001

This fixture has followed remarkable consistency over the last few seasons. Both teams beat each other at home, but fail to win away. Saturday’s game was no exception.

Broomfield characteristically started slowly, allowing their opponents to go close to scoring when the Winchmore Hill attacker somehow managed to miss a completely open goal. However, Broomfield didn’t learn their lesson and Winchmore Hill took the lead when slack marking in defence allowed Hill’s forward to head home, the ball bouncing just in front of keeper Mark Robbins.

This provoked a reaction from Broomfield, who started to threaten more as the half wore on. A series of corners were well defended by the opposition, and Broomfield came close to equalising when Jody Fry shot just wide after being put through by some great approach play by Joel Regisford.

As the game progressed, the Winchmore Hill keeper was forced into making two good saves that kept Winchmore Hill’s lead intact. More slack defending however, allowed Winchmore Hill another goalscoring opportunity, which they duly took to lead 2 - 0. Broomfield committed more forward in an effort to salvage something from the game, but found Hill’s keeper in great form.

A disappointing defeat for Broomfield highlights their recent tendency to start playing after it’s too late. It is a trend that needs to be quickly reversed if Broomfield are to seriously challenge the front runners in the division. A major positive for Broomfield in this game was Jody Fry’s performance in midfield, who worked tirelessly and covered a lot of ground as Broomfield chased the game.

Team; Robbins, Tomaso, (Brennan), Gibson, Bailey, Kirk, (Wilson), Fry, Knight, (Allen), Holbard, Regisford J, Wescott R, Georgiou.

South Bank Cuaco 0 - 1 Broomfield 17/11/2001

Broomfield came away with all three points on Saturday following a closely fought encounter away to South Bank Cuaco.

On a surprisingly heavy pitch, Broomfield started brightly with good movement from Paul Georgiou and Ian Monk up front. South Bank also had their moments in an eventful opening but it was Broomfield who took the lead when, following a Rupert Allen long throw in, the ball was diverted past the South Bank keeper by their unfortunate Captain.

The remainder of the first half saw Broomfield hold on to their lead courtesy of two fantastic saves from Mark Robbins, one of which was a remarkable ‘claw out’ from the top corner.

In the second half Broomfield could have increased their lead on a number of occasions, but somehow they conspired to waste each opportunity. As the game wore on, South Bank Cuaco threw more men forward in search of the equaliser, but Broomfield’s back line worked impressively to negate their threat, meaning that the majority of Cuaco’s efforts on goal were from long range.

This result owed much to Broomfield’s ability to ‘dig in and grind out a result’. However, the consensus of opinion in the Broomfield camp afterwards was that the victory should have been far more comfortable than it actually turned out to be. Nevertheless, it was a great away victory and a welcome clean sheet.

Team; Robbins, Tomaso, Taylor, Brennan, Bailey, Kirk, Fry, Wescott, Allen, Georgiou, Monk, (Knight).

Broomfield 0 - 3 EBOG 17/11/2001

Broomfield 2nd XI went out of the MAFA Cup at the first round stage after a home defeat against EBOG's.

A shaky start handed the initiative to the away side, and they went ahead after twenty minutes when a shot across goal from the edge of the area slipped through goalkeeper's Mark Robbins hands and trickled into the net. EBOG's increased their lead shortly after when a cross was headed in at the far post.

The second half saw Broomfield chasing the game and they enjoyed more possession. Their best chance fell to Paul Georgiou, who after being picked out by a Richard Wescott cross, failed to find the target with his header.

Ten minutes from time EBOG's killed the game off when their lively forward, benefiting from the ball running free after being tackled, finished well with a left foot shot into the bottom corner.

Broomfield were disappointed to lose at the first hurdle of this competition, however there were some good points to be taken from the defeat, most notably Clyde Brennan's impressive performance at centre back. Credit must also be given to EBOG's who were the better side on the day and deserved their victory.

Team; Robbins, Tomaso, Tully (Taylor), Brennan, Bailey, Regisford J, Fry, Knight, Allen, Wescott, Georgiou.

Old Salopians 2 – 1 Broomfield 10/11/2001

Broomfield’s AFA cup run came to an end on Saturday after a closely fought 2-1 defeat away to Old Salopians.

A slow start from Broomfield gave Salopians the initiative, and after having most of the early possession, they deservedly took the lead when a long range effort from the Salopians centre forward took a deflection and looped over Paul Dorling.

This stirred Broomfield into life and they started to threaten more. However, any chance of parity was dashed by a poor refereeing decision. An advantage was played after an innocuous ball to hand incident in the Broomfield penalty area, a clear strike on goal was allowed, only for the referee to then award a penalty after Dorling had saved the shot. Salopians converted the penalty to go 2-0 up.

A Mick Young team talk at half time provoked a positive reaction from Broomfield, and they hit back immediately when Andy Tomaso’s free kick was flicked on by Richard Wescott for Ian Monk to smash home.

Despite all Broomfield’s efforts, they were unable to unlock the Salopians defence further, and the hosts held on to win 2-1.

A slow start cost Broomfield dear on reflection, however the penalty decision was a clear factor in Broomfield exiting the AFA cup at this stage.

Team; Dorling, Tomaso, Georgiou, Brennan,(sub:Taylor), Bailey, Regisford J, Fry, Knight, Allen, Wescott, Monk.

Broomfield 4 - 1 Old Salesians 03/11/2001

After two successive league defeats, Broomfield got their league campaign back on the rails with a comfortable victory over Old Salesians.

After recent performances, Captain Andy Tomaso decided to change the formation back to 4-4-2, and Broomfield certainly seemed to have a better balanceright from the off.

Richard Wescott opened the scoring after five minutes with a superb individual effort. Picking up the ball on the edge of the area, he calmly roundedtwo defenders before placing the ball into the net. Broomfield's front two continued to trouble the Salesians defence, assisted down the flanks by the industrious Rupert Allen and Joel Regisford. More chances were created until Ian Monk turned just inside the area and fired in a tremendous shot to increase our lead to 2-0.

The second half saw Broomfield impose themselves further. Jody Fry and Lee Knight in the center of midfield ensured Broomfield commanded that area, and a well worked move between Joel Regisford and Ian Monk, allowed Richard Wescott to claim his second of the game with a running volley.

Salesians battled back, but were thwarted by sound defending from the Broomfield back four of Nathan Tully, Clyde Brennan, Paul Georgiou and AndyBailey. However, after a scramble in the area they did win a penalty, which was superbly saved by Paul Dorling. Dorling has now saved three penalties out of five thisseason.

Two Broomfield substitutions saw the introduction of John Taylor and Rob Walker, and it was John Taylor who scored Broomfield's fourth when he ventured upfield to score a well taken volley. Right at the end, Salesians scored on the counter attack to earn a consolation goal.

Recent league performances have been disappointing for Broomfield after their positive start to the league season. This made victory in this leaguegame all the more important. Andy Tomaso and Mick Young were demanding the three points, and a positive performance, and the players responded accordingly.

Team; Dorling, Tully(sub;Taylor), Brennan, Georgiou, Bailey, Regisford J, Fry, Knight(sub;Walker), Allen, Wescott, Monk.

Old Esthameians 3 - 0 Broomfield 27/10/2001

Frustrating is probably the best adjective to use in describing the 2nd XI's away defeat against Old Esthameians on Saturday.

For an hour, the game was extremely close with Broomfield carving out the clearer, if very few, goalscoring chances. Both sides played some nice football with only the final ball letting either side down. On the hour however, Broomfield came closest to scoring when Joel Regisford's shot flashed just wide of the post. This marked a turning point in the game, as a Broomfield defensive mistake from a quickly taken free kick allowed the Esthameians forward to fire a first time shot into the net to give Esthameians the lead.

A poor second from Broomfield's point of view was then conceded from a throw in, and with Broomfield commiting numbers forward to get back into the game, Esthameians killed the game off by scoring on the counter attack.

A disappointing defeat, and 3-0 was a harsh scoreline given how close the game had been.

Team; Dorling, Wescott, Tomaso, Bailey, Allen, Wilson, Regisford J, Regisford E, Walker, Hamilton, Georgiou. Subs; Monk, Fry (not used).

Broomfield 5 - 4 Royal Sun Alliance 20/10/2001

A highly entertaining Middlesex Intermediate cup match saw Broomfield edge this closely fought encounter. After last weeks disappointing performance, Broomfield applied themselves impressively from the start and imposed themselves on the game far more effectively.

A fine 25 yard strike from Gary Wilson saw Broomfield take the lead after good work from Ian Monk. Unfortunately, two quick goals from defensive lapses undid all the good work and Broomfield found themselves chasing the game.

A long ball out from sweeper Paul Georgiou found its way to Joel Regisford who finished well to make it 2-2. However, a counter attack from RSA ended up with a foul being committed in the area and the Referee awarding a penalty. It was converted well for RSA to lead 3-2.

Good work from Jody Fry down the right resulted in his cross being diverted intoRSA’s net by one of their defenders, and then Richard Wescott marked an impressive first half by firing in to put Broomfield 4-3 up.

The second half saw Broomfield push hard to increase their lead. A series of close encounters at either end left Broomfield clutching a slender lead, until 15 minutes from time, a costly defensive slip left RSA’s forward oneon one with the keeper and he took the chance well.

With 3 minutes remaining, and extra time and penalties looming, Joel Regisford was fouled in the area and Gary Wilson coolly converted it for Broomfield to lead 5-4. A fine late save from Paul Dorling meant Broomfield kept their lead until the final whistle.

A much better performance this week in terms of attitude and commitment, however Broomfield still seem content to only play in patches. A steady improvement in all areas has to be continued in order for Broomfield to make real progress this season. However, one defeat in nine matches still inspires confidence and shows some progress has already been achieved.

Broomfield 0 - 6 Alleyn Old Boys 13/10/2001

Broomfield 2nd XI unbeaten run came to a spectacular end when they were thrashed by a well organised Alleyn Old Boys side.

Right from the off it became apparent that Broomfield seemed to show only a mild interest in trying to win the game, obviously letting the fine start to their season go to their heads.

After conceding two early goals, Broomfield responded with Ernest Regisford hitting the bar after Rupert Allen had broken free down the left hand side. However, it was the closest Broomfield came to scoring, as Alleyn went on to ruthlessly punish a series of unforced Broomfield errors to incredibly lead 5-0 after half an hour.

At half time Broomfield received ‘the mother of all dressing downs’ from Mick Young, but by then the game was realistically over.

The second half showed a modicum of improvement, but Broomfield still resembled a group of lazy students taking a year off. Their misery was compounded by conceding a penalty in the last minute which Alleyn duly converted.

Alleyn Old Boys fully deserved their victory, and nothing should, or can be taken away from them. However, Broomfield’s attitude and application to this game was bewildering, especially given the fact that they went into this game unbeaten since August. If they are to realise any of the hopes they are harbouring for this season, they first need to realise that they have to compete equally with any opposition to stand any chance. They seemed to approach the game feeling they just had to turn up to get a result. It will be interesting to see what happens next week.

Lloyds Bank 2 - 4 Broomfield 06/10/2001

Broomfield's solid start to the new season continued on Saturday with a comfortable win over Lloyds bank. Having set the pattern of play with some confident opening passing, Broomfield looked settled and compact in the midfield. Richard Wescott pulled up lame early after only fiveminutes – enter Rob Walker. Rob made an explosive start, latching on to a loose ball before lobbing the keeper with a fine finish from just inside the box.

Good movement from the returning Lewis Holbard and Terry Wildman helped retain posession of the ball, whilst Gary Wilson gave balance and composure to an assured first half performance. Lloyds were limited to long range efforts throughout the first half, comfortably dealt with by the everimproving Paul Dorling.

The second half started much the same as the first, a scorching drive from Lee Knight from fully 30 yards putting Broomfield 2-0 up. A dubious penalty decision against Andy Bailey then pegged Broomfield back temporarily before Rob Walker calmlynotched his second to restore a two goal advantage for the Brooms, calmly slipping the ball under the advancing keeper with his left foot.(Those on the sideline knew he was on topform and beginning to show off by now!)

Good work from Rupert Allen on the right side resulted in a series of corners. Andy Tomaso went close on a number of occasions after getting free at the back post, he was unlucky not to continue his rich vain of goalscoring form.

Lloyds to their credit dug deep, forcing a fine save from Paul Dorling before capitalising on an ‘unusual’ clearance from captain Andy Tomaso to pull the score back to 3-2. Fine defending from Rob Wildman , John Taylor and especially Nathan Tully frustrated the Lloyds forwards as theywere running out of time.

The game was put beyond doubt shortly before the final whistle by man of the match Rob Walker. He finished a fine teammove to complete his hat trick move and give a deserved 4-2 scoreline. This puts Broomfield joint top together with Polytechnic and Old Esthameians in the division two title race.

There is a determination and belief about the side this year, sometimes illusive in previous seasons. Under the guidance of the Mick Young and with competition for places at an all time high, Broomfield will be looking to consolidate their position with ahome game against Alleyn Old Boys this Saturday.

Broomfield 2 -1 Winchmore Hill 29/09/2001

The 2nd XI played their first league game of the season last Saturday, enjoying a fine 2-1 win over local rivals Winchmore Hill.

In a very closely fought game, a tense first half saw no real clear cut chances for either side. Midfield was a key area with both teams fighting hard to gain control. 0-0 at half time was a fairindication of how the game had progressed up to that point.

The second half started badly for us when we conceded a harshly awarded penalty in the opening minute. Despite clear indication that Andy Tomaso had fouled his man outside the area, the referee changed his mind after initially awarding a free kick togive a penalty. Winchmore Hill converted it to go 1-0 up.

This provoked a great reaction from us and we started to impose ourselves and control the game. We came close to equalising when Jody Fry headed just wide from a fine Lee Knight corner. Five minutes later, Andy Tomaso did equalise when heheaded home at the far post from another corner.

As we continued to control the game, the impressive Nathan Tully bought the ball out fromdefence, took on a couple of players before feeding Rupert Allen on the right. His fine cross was superbly headed home by Joel Regisford to give us the lead.

Despite Winchmore Hills efforts to get back into the game, we defended solidly and should of increased our lead when Richard Wescott went close towards the end.

Afine win to start off our league campaign. Again we showed the character and spirit we have in the side, by coming from behind to win a game for the third week in arow. We also passed the ball a lot better than we did the previous week which pleased everybody. A solid performance by everybody, in which Jody Fry stood out for his tireless work in midfield.

Broomfield 4 - 2 Old Camdenians 22/09/2001 Int Cup

Despite a lackluster performance, the 2nd XI overcame Old Camdenians to progress through to the next round of the Intermediate Cup. We struggled to produce much of the fine passingand movement that we have seen in all of our pre-season performances, but credit must also be given to the opposition who worked hard and closed us down, particularly in the first half.

We took the lead 20 minutes in when, after a series of threatening corners, Andy Tomaso headed in after another fine corner from Lee Knight. A scrappy first half then ended with Camdenians grabbing the equaliser from a goal mouth scramble.

Thesecond half found us struggling again to get our passing game going, and we conceded a poor goal to trail 2-1. We responded well however, with Rupert Allen scoring theequaliser. A tactical switch saw Richard Wescott pushed up front from his defensive role, and it was his thunderous shot off the post that allowed him to score direct from the rebound to give us the lead again. A sweeping move then saw Ian Monk continue his goalscoring streak with a superb first time volley into the net for our fourth goal.

A satisfactory result, but a disappointing performance. The consensus of opinion after the game was that the 2nd XI can play a lot better. The most positive aspect of this game however, was our ability to dig in and fight our way to a result despite not being on top of our game.
