6th XI Match Reports

Old Finchleians 8 5-0 Broomfield 6 15/11/03

After losing 4-2 to Norsemen last week in a very close game we were hoping to give Old Finchleians 8 the same performance we gave Norsemen last week even though Finchley were a very strong team winning their division last season and only conceding 2 goals this season in 5 games one in the league and one in the SAL Cup unfortunately we didn’t have much players this week because Dave Chapman, Dave the Barman and our other defender Paul were called up for the 4th XI so Neil was our manager and captain for today telling us that Finchley’s defence was weak but attack strong but maybe not knowing they won the league last season. When the match started it all went well in the first 15 minutes the Broomfield goalie forced a very hard save with his foot, somehow his hands were tied up, this was very early until we conceded our first goal. The second goal came about 5 minutes after and there was no way that goal could be prevented from either the defence or keeper and that’s how it finished at half time. The 2nd half started ok for both teams for the first 20 minutes there was no score until one of the finchely strikers got past all the defenders and shot on goal making it 3-0. After that we only had one shot on goal, which was the only time the finchley keeper had to work. For the last 20 minutes of the game we had to go down 10 men because one of the finchley players kicked our defender Aldo on his right ankle on purpose has he was clearing the ball and had to go off with his ankle injury which he also had from previous games and the referee taking no action just giving us a throw on, we could not sub him off because we used our only sub earlier in the first half. The other two goals came around the last 15 minutes, which I thought were both offside having the best view being the goalie. So at the moment we are having a consecutive run of 7 games played and 7 games lost, next week we have East Barnet Old Gramms 7 and we are still in search of our first Point

Norseman 7 4 - 2 BROOMFIELD 08/11/03

Scorers: Simpson, Combe

We went into this match winless, drawless and pointless, and without the promised Andy Tomaso and Gary Wilson. After a long detailed team talk from Bob which only one player missed we felt confident that we could get a result at rivals Norseman. The first twenty minutes were very promising with Broomfield bossing the midfield, our dominance was rewarded when Darren Simpson smashed the ball home from twenty five yards. We continued to play well and it was only a moment of madness that let them back into the game, the aforesaid goalscorer felt the need to flap his hand at the ball in the area and give Norseman a penalty, which they duly converted. We still looked good for a one all draw at half time when Aldo bundled the ball over our own line to put Norseman 2-1 up. Ten minutes after half time we changed the system back to four-four-two with the excellent Neil Haggar going off, knackered. It seemed to work and Dave Chapman struck a Beckham-esque pass through the Norseman defence for Dave Combe to score 2-2. This season the sixes have been blessed with exceedingly biased refereeing and yet again we got the ‘rub of the green’ as one of the Norseman attackers pushed over our defender to let his mate score 3-2. That effectively killed the game and Norseman grabbed a fourth to seal the points 4-2. Man of the Match as ever was the rock like Dave Chapman who awarded himself a modest 9 out of 10. There are, however, more encouraging signs with Aldo and Eddy playing brilliantly at full back and Bobby and Darren getting close to a bit of fitness.

Old Actonians 7 6 - 0 Broomfield 6 1/11/2003

Despite the fact that the sixes have been banjoed almost every week team morale was high as we set off round the north circular in search of an elusive first league point. We had the equal share of possession early on, as Darren Simpson and Chris Macdonald created some dangerous attacking situations. However, early optimism was subdued as Actonians scored two quick goals and the heads started to go down yet again. At half time Bob Wildman gave us real encouragement by declaring “That was absolutely crap!” Out we trudged for the second half sill believing we could at least nick a point, however, within 5 minutes Actonians scored their third and that was effectively that. Not so, having missed an earlier chance Dave Combe scored after being put through by young Jamie Wildman, we celebrated, Actonians went to kick off, and the referee (who turned out to be their club chairman) inexplicably awarded a goal kick. He then proceeded to give Dave Chapman a talking to for his ‘cheek’. This effectively killed the game and Actonians scored another two goals, to seal a win that rather flattered them. There is good news on the horizon, next week we play Norseman who, according to team statistician and goalie Mule, have lost their last five matches, and there is rumour that Andy Tommaso and Gary Wilson will be ‘promoted’ to the sixes. However, as long as the team stays together for a bit longer we actually get a point! - ‘The Barman’
