Veterans XI Match Reports

Broomfield 1 - 2 Old Albanians 1/11/2003

With less than a minute remaining and Albanians just having had a man sent off, Broomfield were awarded a penalty which could have sent the match into extra-time and, almost certain, victory. John Taylor stepped up with all the confidence of David Batty and you know the rest…

Broomfield had started with high expectations, especially as goalkeeper Chris Shallcross was safely out of the way in Bulgaria. Although Broomfield had plenty of territorial advantage, they found themselves a goal down at half-time (the events leading up to the goal are rather hazy as I had not yet reached the ground)

A double substitution on the hour mark with Andy ‘murderer’ Tyler and Johnny Jones replacing Lawrence Price and Richard O’Brien paid immediate dividends. A penetrative run by an Albanian forward which saw him elude the Broomfield defence and race into the penalty area where he was needlessly upended by the aforesaid ‘murderer’ (perhaps he should have stayed in Colombia.) The rest of the match belonged to John Taylor, he scored a good goal with about ten minutes left, missed when it was easier to score and then there was that penalty.

From a personal point of view there were a couple of things that need mentioning. There were at least two people on the pitch who I could outsprint, unbelievable, but true. More importantly we need to see the likes of Rob Watts, Dave Harrison, Alex Bell, Dave Jones etc playing more matches down at the club.

Andy Coombe.
