2nd XI Match Reports

Lloyds Bank 2's 1-2 Broomfield 2's 4 Feb 2006

"Storm in a Tea cup half time" drives the Brooms on to Victory

The last long away trip of the season and Carlo the tackle was beset by some late call offs with players dropping like flies in this freezing weather(yeah right) Despite this a very competent and reasonably intelligent team made the journey to Bromley(quickly bypassing kidbrooke-what a dump that is !) and it was a well warmed up and motivated Broomfield that began the game. Fod was back in the line up alongside Ricky who had his breakfast just before kick off, along with ten fags and a can of tenants, sorry tea. In the first half we played some delightful one touch football and we made some great chances with Fod, Phil and Mog all coming close. The creative football from Ricky, Phil and Kaz was a joy to see, and with Lawrie and Rob having their best games since Christmas, winning every header, always first to the ball against two decent younger forwards, it seemed like it was just a matter of time as we went in for the break.

Then all hell broke loose as some players vented their frustration and aired their views, tea cups and handbags were thrown all over the grass along with some Tofu, but it was eventually calmed down by the management and we began the second half like the first with lots more chances being made. Then, yet again Sacre Bleu, Quelle disaster, we were down. A pass hit the ref which let in the winger behind Terry and he hit in a cross that was eventually toe poked in. It seemed like it was one of those days.

We kept playing the football though and the one touch stuff seemed to increase. Fod was replaced by Gary( he had a sore wrist, hmmm !!!!! ) and it was the old Jedi master that won the penalty, going down in the box just as he was about to unleash hell. Cool, calm sophisticated Kaz strolled up and knocked in the penalty whilst reading his paper, such was his calm approach. It was on. We were all over them now like one of those rashes that Fod gets sometimes and it was a superb winner that completed the game. After switching the play Mog(all calm now) hit a beautiful cross that Terry latched on to with his head like Alan Sugar(sorry Shearer) and the celebrations began.

The defence under the guidance of the" Bishop" in goal shut up shop, Carlo anchored the midfield, Phil caused havoc with his bluetooth headset attached to his ear, and the three points were ours. After the game, at their country retreat, Gary and Carlo almost choked on their cocktails and cigars when they saw that all the other results went our way and it is now the Brooms who reign supreme at the top of Division three. They then left with a smile on their face for Spearmint Rhino. What a weekend ! Again we have players back next week and competition is tight for Ibis at home, training is essential, commitment is expected, winning is the result. The journey continues... Up the Brooms !!!!

Broomfield 2's 2-2 Southgate 2's 28 Jan 2006

Brooms show that Dunkirk Spirit to earn a battling draw.

On a bitterly cold afternoon in North London two rivals met in a key match to decide who is promoted from division 3. The manager made some changes and a youthful team took the field and started well with plenty of confident football despite the wind. Broomfield carved out some excellent chances and only great keeping kept Joel and Mog at bay.

We were playing some super football with Paul Georgiou having a particularly good half, meaning he was winning headers and passing and running and stuff. Southgate are no mugs mind and went ahead after a neat piece of skill by their forward who turned away from three players(twice) and whacked in a cross that was eventually smashed in.It could have been worse except for an outstanding save from " The Bishop " from a shot that was curling in. We went in a bit deflated but certain that we could pull it around. Manager Carlo made some changes with the Kazster coming on, and he set Terry up with a super cross that narrowly went over. Then...... sacre Bleu, disaster struck when their forward muscled out St Tropez tan man Neil for the only time of the game to put the gate 2.0 up. Neil feels that it was his own oil that helped the player slip off him, such a shame. It was all over, oh no it wasn't, this is Broomfield mate !Everything was against us, the wind died down, the sun got worse(Neil was happy though) , it got colder, gas prices are rising, the middle east seems like a vicious spiral of hatred etc etc, but after some good hassle from sub Lawrie the kazster made it 2.1 with a cool finish that he supplied whilst drinking a cup of tea and smoking his pipe, such was his calm approach..

We all felt like the plucky heroes from Dunkirk all those years ago, the channel was Hazelwood, Southgate were the Germans and determination was the boats(christ this is good) We pushed on and eventually after some more good hassle from the midfield of Terry, Louis, Carlo the tackle, on as sub for John who was shot by a mysterious sniper in the first half, we got a deserved equaliser with Phil getting his foot on to a clearance resulting in a great bulge in the southgate net. He said he meant it and we'll accept his lies. Hopefully now he will carry this joy to the local sports shop and buy some sleeves for his t shirts, poor lad. It was 2.2 and there for the taking. It was a tight finish though with Rob having to stand firm like an anchor alongside the defence as southgate put on a nippy three foot winger called Bjorn Borg who nearly nicked it for them in the last seconds of the game, his bandana slipping over his eyes at the wrong time .However the plucky Brooms did not let it slip and it was a well earned draw. As the boys enjoyed their Cappucinos and organic Flapjacks afterwards, it was decided that it was a point well earned as Southgate will beat a lot of teams. The spirit is very good, not one booking or argument and even Mick could give his talk in peace. The banter is great with lots of talk about the latest books and classical music and the debate over synthetic phonics.

The attitude is excellent and the season is alive and well. A special thanks to the referee who took time off from filming the title role in My name is earl to run the game , thanks a lot. Next week will be a tough one and it was this that occupied the minds of Fod and Gary as they supped on their Espressos and read their Razzle magazines, " WHY DO WE HAVE 22 PLAYERS AVAILABLE AT HOME AND BLOODY 9 FOR LLOYDS AWAY" ahh such is life... Training continues on Tuesday.......THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES NEXT WEEK

Broomfield 2's 5-2 Kew 2's 21 Jan 2006

A new dawn seems to have set over the second team of Broomfield initiated by Gary and Carlo and the name of this sunrise is YOUTH. On a lovely day on an excellent surface beautifully cared for by Fod's brother the 2nds began the quest to get their season on track with a new 3 man defence and some new additions in Phil up front, promoted along with Terry from the fourths. The game began well for Broomfield with everybody sticking to their roles and after a super through ball from the Kazster Phil sent Broomfield into the lead with a fantastic booming finish which caught their keeper off guard. That old enemy complacency set in and soon we were under a lot of pressure as Kew played some intelligent football using the flanks. They soon equalised with a brilliant volley after a good cross from the left, the four foot one striker rose superbly to crack it past a an otherwise superb Bishop in goal.

From then on it was like the Alamo with Broomfield going quiet and Kew constantly pressing. Adam made some super saves to keep us in it only for an unfortunate defensive mistake allowed Kew to go in 2.1 at the break. Mick and Fod pumped us up at half-time and after a few tactical changes we made it 2.2 with Moggy finishing off a super 5 man move. Terry and John entered the fray as well as Joel and this injection of youth was too much for Kew who eventually succumbed to a Carlo long shot. It was 3.2 and the gloom was lifting. Neil was stopping their best player from touching the ball, Carlo and Lewis were running the midfield and our new players were causing havoc. E ventually Terry found Peter Mog with a lovely long ball and it was 4.2.

We then sewed the game up with Lawrie nice and strong at the back and lots of positive tackling and hunting in packs. As the day began to end the Broomfield heroes trudged back to the changing room for lots of banter and the odd row. As they read their classical novels in the evening and listened to their Mozart it is probable that the happiest player was Paul Georgiou who is beginning to see some success in his training methods and the fact that more and more second team players are going every Tuesday. Long may it continue, we can still do it. A special mention to Rob Wildman who noticed how slow I was at a corner, ha, the truth hurts. To all Broomfield seconds, your place is not certain-let the fight begin ...
