Saturday 26th September

It was another glorious sunny day in London. And on the fine surface of Hazelwood rec there was a very good 2-1 win for the 1st team against Nottsborough with goals from Floyd Nelson and Jimmy Jacobs. So far, it's three out of three and a promising start for the 1s. The reserves followed the success of the 1s with an excellent 2-0 win in the Middlesex AFA cup to Southgate Olympic with a brace of goals from the ever improving Barney Jones. The 3s had an excellent 3-0 win in the AFA cup against Old Edmontonians with two goals from Joel Regisford and one from Dave Linehan. After a long trek across London, the 4s lost 2-0 in the SAL cup to Old Westminister Citizens. Unfortunately the 5th team game was called off on the Friday, and after a good start to the league season the previous week, the 6th team were involved in a scrappy 4-3 loss to Southgate Olympic 5s despite goals from Moggy, Ricky Espirit and Mike O'Donnell.

The 6th team started their league campaign with a good 2-1 win in a very tight game against Old Stationers with goals from Chris McDonald and Mike O'Donnell (match report below).

Old Stationers vs Broomfield 6s

First league game of the season, and it was a beltingly hot day more suited for showing off summer tans than running around a pitch for 90 minutes. Broomfield arrived with a posse of new players keen to show their skills in front of the new manager Phil Inkelaar. Old Stationers started brightly, channelling all their play through the midfield and using the height of their right mid-fielder to provide the flick ons to their lone striker. Broomfield took a good 20 minutes to get going but showed some good promise with Moggy and Chris McDonald testing the opposition defence. After 30 minutes, Old Stationers fired in a speculative shot that hit the arm of the left back Ben Richardson. Surprisingly the referee decided that it had been intentional and awarded a penalty. Thankfully, Paul Dorling in the Broomfield goal guessed correctly and saved with his legs. With 10 minutes to go before half time Anil Nistry got on the end of a bouncing ball and rattled the cross bar. Both teams went in to half time all square. The second half was a different story with Broomfield providing all the possession, Old Stationers had the odd break but were comfortably snuffed out by the Broomfield defence. With 20 minutes to go Chris McDonald rode through three tackles to slide the ball under the on rushing goal keeper. Five minutes later a speculative cross was mis-judged by Paul in goal and the score was 1-1. Phil Inkelaar went off with an ankle injury, with Andy French moving over into the centre of defence. With minutes to go, Mike O'Donnell picked up a loose ball and fired in the winner from 20 yards. Game over

Old Finchleans vs Broomfield 3s

Broomfield got their season of to the best possible start with a free-scoring 6-4 victory over Old Finchleans. Having narrowly missed out on promotion last season on goal difference the result left few in any doubt that Roman Lagos’ side want to have no such worries this year. Old Finchleans, who were outscored in an old-fashioned shoot out, could not live with a vibrant Broomfield who kept up an impressive high tempo throughout and are slowly wiping away the memory of last season’s heartache. Initially though all did not bode well with the blues going 2 down inside the first 25 minutes. A robust if unspectacular Finchleans side were able to carve open the blues on two separate occasions to take an undeserved lead. The lead was short lived though. Fitzgerald (Tom) grabbed the first from the penalty spot after Fitzgerald (Danny) had been fouled after taking on three defenders in the box. The second arrived from the head of Linehan after a fine ball from a Munoz free-kick. The two quick fire goals demonstrated the vulnerability of the home sides defence and the obvious attacking potential of the blues. Further chances came and went for Fitzgerald (Danny), Linehan and Fitzgerald (Tom). The absence of Conolly forced Lagos into a tactical change playing an adventurous 3-5-2 formation. Lagos holding in the centre alongside Dunne and Regisford with Linehan and Strickland playing the wingback roles. Strickland playing compact and tight on the right and Linehan playing more free and roving providing a good balance for the work-man-like Dunne and powerful Regisford to dictate matters in the game saw the visitors dominate the final 15 minutes of the first half. With the home side having given everything but still only managing to be level at half-time it was no surprise that they felt deflated. The second half continued in the same vain as the first had finished. Dorling, Ellis, Lankford and Munoz coming to grips with the Old Finchleans attack allow the blues attackers and in particular Linehan and Fitzgerald (Danny) to get more time and space on the ball to direct operations. With the blues dominating possession a goal had to arrive and it duly did. A fine finish from Fitzgerald (Danny) beating two players before slotting confidently into the corner of the net. Not content the home side rallied again and equalised – albeit in a fortuitous manner. The blues again responded with this time Fitzgerald (Tom) slotting after latching on to a fine through ball from Linehan. The blues were now dominating possession with Edwards, a second half substitute, providing the platform for more attacks and Carrington producing a nice 25 minute cameo with some tricky runs. Incredibly though Finchleans would not lie down and equalised again. Second-half substitute Williams was nearly able to snatch back the lead with a fine shot that was well saved by the home keeper. With the game poised at 4-4 and both teams seemingly bent on scoring at will it was left to the goals of the game to settle this encounter. First, second half substitute Carrington finishing with aplomb after a fine pass through the middle and then finishing with equal composure by Fitzgerald(Danny). The blues will be happy with the victory but know that greater tests lie further ahead. Scorers; Danny Fitzgerald (2), Tom Fitzgerald (2), Linehan, Carrington
